Lisbon, Portugal.  The Elevador de Santa Justa.  Designed by an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel.  Blocked from this angle is the bridge leading to a neighborhood at a higher elevation.  The elevator saved weary pedestrians a lot of steps!

Lisbon's Torre de Belém.  Built as a fortress in the middle of the Tagus river from 1515 to 1521.  A land reclamation project in the 19th century narrowed the river, repositioning the fortress on the northern bank.
